Meitantei Conan Kara Kurenai no Love Letter (Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter), the 21st Detective Conan (Case Closed) anime film, sold 987,568 tickets and earned 1,286,928,000 yen (about US$11.88 million) in its opening Saturday-Sunday weekend, setting a new opening weekend record for the franchise.
The 2015 film Detective Conan: Gōka no Himawari (Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno) held the previous record, with 4.48 billion yen (about US$41.6 million) in box-office earnings.
In comparison, Detective Conan: Junkoku no Nightmare (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare), the 20th film, sold 933,800 tickets for 1.209 billion yen (about US$11.1 million at the time) in its first two days at the box office in April 2016.
As of May 2016, the anime film franchise exceeded 60 billion yen (about US$557.6 million) in total box-office earnings.
