Kinema Junpo, Japan’s oldest film magazine that began publication in 1919, today announced the winners of its 90th Kinema Junpo Best 10 Award.
The anime film adaptation of Fumiyo Kouno’s award-winning manga Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni/In This Corner of the World was named best Japanese film of 2016, and its director Sunao Katabuchi also won the Best Director Award.
This is the first time in 28 years for an anime film to be selected as the best film of the year since Hayao Miyazaki’s Tonari no Totoro/My Neighbor Totoro in 1988.
