Yokosuka-city in Kanagawa Prefecture announced on May 20 that the name of Sarushima (literally means Monkey Island), a desert island in Tokyo Bay, will be changed to “Monkey D. Luffy Island” for a limited time of 105 days from July 8 to October 20, 2019.
This is part of the city and Kanagawa-based company Triangle’s collaboration project with the One Piece anime franchise’s 20th anniversary, named “Utagejima 2019 Manatsu no Monkey D. Luffy Tou” (Party Island: Monkey D. Luffy Island in Full Summer).
The island is now maintained by Yokosuka-city, and has become one of the popular sightseeing spots in the area.
