Toei is projecting that One Piece Film Gold will earn more than 6 billion yen (about US$56.46 million), possibly surpassing the 6.87 billion yen (about US$64.64 million) gross of the previous film, One Piece Film Z. While One Piece Film Z screened during a three-week winter break when it opened in 2012, One Piece Film Gold is screening during the four-week summer break and also has 3D, 4DX, and MX4D screenings.
Toei revealed on Monday that the One Piece Film Gold movie earned 1,155,771,000 yen (about US$10.87 million) in its opening weekend, and sold 820,830 tickets over 743 screens, topping the Japanese box office ranking.
One Piece Film Gold opened in Japan on 743 screens, which is the largest for any Japanese film.
The film is also screening with English and Chinese subtitles in five cities in Japan from July 23 to August 5.
