The film began a wider screening run from October 11 to October 18 in over 440 theaters in the United States.
The film has surpassed the earnings and ticket sales of director Anno’s previous film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
Shin Godzilla represents the latest in TOHO’s film series after a 12-year absence since 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.
The film is the highest-earning domestic live-action film made since 2013’s The Eternal Zero, which earned 8.76 billion yen (about US$84.5 million at the time).
