The film is also the 6th highest-grossing Japanese film, and 11th highest-grossing Japanese or overseas film overall.
Mitsuha is a female high school student who lives in a rural town nestled deep in the mountains.
The film won the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 49th annual Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain on Saturday.
The film is still the fifth highest-grossing anime film in Japan, and has not yet surpassed Ponyo’s 15.50 billion yen (US$152.9 million) earnings.
