Despite an investment by the Japanese branch of a Chinese animation company in 2016 which bought up a controlling interest (51%) of the company’s stock, Artland Animation Studio proved unable to turn a profit, and has begun bankruptcy proceedings with a total debt of about 298 million yen ($2.6 million US).
Artland Animation Studio split off from Marvelous in 2010, and their fortunes peaked in 2013 with an annual income of about 260 million yen (about $2.3 million US).
It’s a sad day whenever an animation studio shutters its doors, and the latest business to fall is Artland Animation Studio.
